This is the one I was working on today in the Com Lab... This isn't nearly as complex or complicated as I could have made it. There are some interesting ideas here which are covered in the Addendum we've gone through in class. But it will help you get the events and themes into some sort of logical order.

sorry i was just wondering if you could breifly explain the factories system that hobson reccomended?
ReplyDeleteThe Factory System was used by Britain in India. Rather than 'Conquer, Colonise and Control' which was difficult, unpredictable and expensive in cost and manpower Britain took the mercantile approach. I think it was Hitler who later called them a Nation of Shopkeepers!
ReplyDeleteThis meant establishing a trading post/town on the coast and using it to dominate (monoplise) the trade with the interior. The natives would value the trade and it would keep out potential rivals.
Hobson saw places like Kororareka as possible sites for a 'Factory' allowing the town to be dominated by Britain (and thus British territory) while Ngapuhi would continue to retain Sovereignty over their lands. Theoretically everyone benefited.
What IHobson didn't forsee were the thousands of Migrants arriving... (factorys were essentially only trading posts.) and the Migrants would demand the land that the Natives owned.
Hi Skye,
ReplyDeleteI think thats pretty much what we discussed in the foyer. Oh by the way I think the quote was actually Napoleon!
Cheers
